Study Of Ancient Sports Rock-painting In North-west China

The opening ceremony of 2008 Beijing Olympics displayed Chinese civilization history of more than 5000 years to the world,wherein the audience is impressed by the elegant and colorful image of a picture scroll——Huashan rock-painting in Ningming, Chongqing, Guangxi, which is firstly unfolded on the ceremony. Rock paintings spread all of China with a large quantity, and primordial sports patterns are shown in many of the rock paintings, especially in the rock paintings existing in the north-west of China.In the thesis, the author firstly defines the theories related to "sports" and "sports rock-painting" which are associated with the sports rock paintings in the north-west region of China. That is because the "sports" discussed in the thesis is different from the traditional sports in connotation, and it especially represents the sports patterns in primordial era. After the theories are stated, the author distinguishes the distribution of the sports rock paintings in the north-west region, and also discusses the sports rock paintings existing in Gansu, Qinghai,Ningxia and Xinjiang so as to lead the reader to learn about the sports rock paintings. The pattern analysis for the sports rock paintings in the north-west region is the focal point of the thesis, and the pattern analysis is mainly carried out on the following four categories:hunting, dancing, fighting and other activities including riding, skiing and the like. On the basis of the above discussion, the primordial sports patterns left over by the sports rock paintings in the north-west region are confirmed according to some kinds of statements about sports origin which are recognized and popularized in sports history circles, and finally the following conclusions are summarized:First, although the primordial sports activities with natural nature is influenced by both geographical environment and cultural environment in the development process and has various developing states, the developing rules are the same. So, the primordial sports in the primitive society at home and abroad which is the beginning of the modern sports can be regarded as an existing social phenomenon.Second, productive labor plays an important role in the beginning of the primordial sports and it is not the unique factor. With the constant development of social productivity, the primordial dance, military battles, religious sacrifice, reproduction worship and so on all inevitably have an impact on the beginning and developing of the primordial sports. The primordial sports can be regarded as the comprehensive result generated under the same background, state and time in different societies.Third, the rock paintings about hunting, dancing, military battles, religious sacrifice, reproduction worship and so on in the north-west region are all characterized by the sports image of primitive nomad and this just reflect that the primordial sports patterns are influenced by different geographical environments. Moreover, the sports rock paintings in the north-west region are the important reference material for the sports origin and development, especially the skiing rock painting which is in Dun-de-bu-la-ke rock painting in Altay; Xinjiang is the powerful evidence that the primordial sports patterns are actually influenced by different geographical environments.
