As one of Chinese classical culture images, "Xiao Xiang" has three features of Chinese culture images:first, it is rich in connotation of Chinese traditional culture.; "Xiao Xiang" culture can be traced back to Chu ci and owns Chu ci's traditional culture; second, it is repeated and reborn. Other fields aside, poetry only is a beloved image for poets from pre-Qin days to Qing dynasty, which has been used in poetry creation and meaning of which been sublimated ceaselessly; third, it is carried on from ancient times to modern times. From pre-Qin days to Qing dynasty, even today, it is existent as a culture sign.Born by Chu ci culture, "Xiao Xiang" has close relationship with second imperial concubine, Shun, Fisherman and Qun Yuan. In the long time from infancy period to pre-Qin dynasty to mature period of Song dynasty, Xiao Xiang have formed its own features by absorbing meanings contained by all these images. From! macroscopic view Xiao Xiang images can be classified into two parts:in close relationship to such literary quotations as the love tragedy of second imperial concubine and Shun, and Qun Yuan, one part is to express feelings of sad and despair; another part is the feelings of plainness, beautifulness and freedom absorbed from the image of Fisherman. These two seemingly contradictory feelings complement and reinforce each other, which forms art tension and reflects Chinese culture's feature of complicatedness and diversity. The image of Xiao Xiang is rich in connotation, by which scholars of Tang dynasty express their sadness of being relegated to other lands and frustration about unrecognized talent. It is also the mainstream feeling of Xiao Xiang image. This kind of feeling plays an important role in Chinese literature and helps form important lyrical tradition of it. However scholars in Song dynasty employ "Xiao Xiang" to express their longing for light and quiet life. Using Xiao Xiang to express different feelings by scholars in Tang dynasty can reflect the changes of overall attitude, aesthetic attitude and individual consciousness of scholars of Song dynasty in different historical environment. As a Chinese culture image, "Xiao Xiang" is not just limited to the field of poetry, but also in other literature and art fields, such as the novel, drama, painting, and music. By analyzing the relationship between "Xiao Xiang" in these art fields and "Xiao Xiang" in poetry, this paper is to present cultural source and history of reception.
