Roland Barthes (1915--1980) was a famous contemporary French literary theorist, and he has also been one of the most famous and influential literature critics one of since the 60s in the West. In his work "Death of the Author", he proposed that "author's death causes reader's regeneration". He thought that the author can no longer be taken as the origin of the text explanation which lies in the reader.This article tries to start from the clues and the conclusion Barthes provided in "Death of the Author", analyze the text and discuss what the advantages and disadvantages of the proof Barthes used have influence our research.The article is divided into three parts.Partâ… :The meaning and argumentation. In this part, the article mainly discusses the meaning, start and development of "the death of the author", and analyzes why Barthes announced the author was dead.Partâ…¡:the background of "the death of the author". It is also divided into three parts:Barthes's character and experience; Sartre system and Saussure system. The latter two influenced Barthes.Partâ…¢:the rationality and irrationality of Barthes'"Death of the Author". Article started introducing the history and concept of "the author" through comparing with the historical concept of the author; thenit displayed the presence manners of the author and analyzed the Author Subjectivity which Barthes has critisized; at the same time, it raised the possibility of the return of the Author Subjectivity based on the judgements which contemporary well-known theorist has had on Barthes'"Death of the Author", and also made it clear how significant thistheoretical study would be for the research of poem today.
