In this Thesis, a study is performed about the origination, development and evolution of modern British nationalism, aiming at the comprehension of the historical role of British nationalism as a whole and analysis on its nature.As the first national country setting on the path of modernization, British nationalism has a great deal worthy of note. Great Britain became the first industrialized country in the world, which accomplished the integration of modernization and the development of national country. It was not a historical coincidence, but related to the historical cultural tradition and temperament of Great Britain. British nationalism seems not as remarkable as far-and-coming nationalism of France, Germany, etc. However, that does not mean that British nationalism does not exist. We should regard British nationalism as the mainstream of modern nationalism because in a large extent British nationalism could be produced by the political liberation of bourgeoisie since modern times. We cannot simply be looked upon nationalism as an ideological form; on the contrary, it is a great political and social movement.The Thesis deals with the five parts of British nationalism. The chapter one is mainly dwelling on the formation of British nation in the cradle of medieval times. The second part discusses that the birth of modern British nationalism at the core of dynasty government. The chapter three focuses on mercantilism and colonialism, by the clue of the British national development, which analyses the evolution of British modern nationalism. The chapter four concludes the characteristics of the British nationalism. The fifth chapter makes the comparisons and contrasts of nationalism between Great Britain and France, Germany. The last part is the conclusion.
