As one of the representatives of Chinese painting school of Meticulous Heavy-color, Pan Jiezi achieved a lot in both production and theory in Meticulous Heavy-color painting. By drawing inspiration from Dunhuan Mural and extracting the essence of foreign art, he produced quite a number of works of classical themes and realistic themes. His theoretical writings include Meticulous Figure Painting Methods,16 Perspectives of Meticulous Heavy Color, On Chinese Painting Art, which played a fairly important role in preserving traditional art and reviving meticulous heavy color painting. His efforts not only helped to promote the development of meticulous heavy painting, but also exerted profound and lasting influence on Chinese painting world.This paper probe into the formation of Pan Jiezi's theory on meticulous heavy color painting from the following four perspectives—painting history, inheriting and developing, spirit implication, language implication. The theory touches on the tradition of ancient Chinese painting, the attitude to innovation, the components constituted by lines, colors and decorations, the spiritual goal it pursued, etc. The author tries to provide some helpful enlightenment about the production of Modern Chinese meticulous heavy-color painting.
