| Documentary is a charming cultural style in the fields of film and television media. By documentary we are able to understand the world as well as ourselves. Topic of this paper is independent documentary starting from the late eighties of last century in the field of documentary in China. Directors of independent documentaries do not rely on the system, and raise funds independently. Their creative ideas will not be restricted by any external factors, so they can easily express their own intentions. Beginning in the late eighties, the Chinese independent documentaries have profound social and cultural ties with the eighties. In this sense, they are known as the New Documentary Movement in China. Independent documentary plays an important role in China's development of film and television. The early development of China's independent documentary is difficult. In addition to financing funds by individuals, the main difficulty is that it has no effective way of broadcasting in China. These independent documentaries frequently win awards abroad, but they are rarely known in China. In the late nineties, which is after the first decade of development, this dilemma has been changed. Spontaneous viewing groups have emerged in different cities. In 2003, China Documentary Film Festival, China Independent Film Festival, and Yunnan Multi Culture Visual Festival began their development. At the same time, some folk film institutions have been set up and come into operation. This paper is to research the folk film institutions and their activities. By collecting and sorting information, it is to show three stages of development in folk film and to do a basic summary and research of the status quo of folk film. The development of the folk film is also the process of discovering and delivering the value of the independent documentary. These folk film institutions and their activities provide more chances and become a driving force for the development of independent documentaries.Considering the development of independent documentary in this century, this paper takes Yunnan Multi Culture Visual Festival as example, the most influential domestic film festival as well as the largest independent documentary festival and exchange platform. This paper takes the films in the competition section of four times of Yunnan Multi Culture Visual Festival into consideration and outlines the development of independent documentaries in recent years through the analysis of directors and subject matters. Finally, This paper uses the concepts and theory of social memory to indicate that China's independent documentary presents a non-governmental perspective of social reality, which is a different kind of memory from the official form and the mainstream. It records the presence of ordinary people in history and constructs a diverse perspective of historical discourse space. Chinese independent documentaries retain a valuable folk memory for us. |
