The period from the Later Qing Dynasty to the Republic of China was a very special times during which tremendous turning points and changes have happened. Yang Qi, who lived in this complicated period, was a poet witnessing those great events and recording them by poems. His poetry has rich contents and can be divided generally into three aspects as follow: history-presenting; singing from heart; inscribing on the paintings. The style of his poetry is colorful and varied, such as the heaviness and bitterness like Du Fu, or the heroism and wanton like Li Bai, or undulating gentleness like Wang Wei, or the profundity and beauty like Li Shangyin. He learnt from many other poets and obtained a unique style of his own at last. Thus Pro. Qian Zhonglian said:"In the Later Qing Dynasty, the best learner of Tang Poetry is undoubtedly Yang Qi."It is not exaggerating to say that he was the representative of the poets of Tang Poetry School.These thesis, basing on the meticulous research of his poetry and poet himself, will analyze him comprehensively combing with his life, the social civilization of the Later Qing Dynasty,the Republic of China and the Anti-Japan War, as well as the situation of the poetic circles that time. Besides that, this thesis will also probe into his rushing about accompanying all his life time and his social experience of every description which gave great influence to his writing. Of course, the main contents and characteristic of his poems, his standpoint of poem theory, the origin and historic position of his poetry are also important topic of this paper.
