A Comparative Study Of Plant Images In Tang Poetry And American Twentieth Century Poetry

The hitting-point of my essay is the theory of image in Sino-US poetry. In the reference of the achievements in academic field in the classification of image, and with the comparison of Tang poetry and American poetry between the construct and appreciate of image, the otherness are set.Tang poetry appreciates the translucent crystal image, which has the beauty of obscure. It can shows the images vividly on paper and tie up the mood in mind without so many words. The poetry of America in the 20 century, especially the poetry of Imagism, abandoning the iambic method for poetry creation to advocate the free body. There is no conjunctional word between sentences, which imitates the writing method-meaning coherent used in Tang poetry. This restrains the emotions to a great extent, and tries to shorten the distance between Subject and Object, which eagers to create the seamless image to come close to Tang poetry. Referring to the construct of image in poetry, the poetry in Tang Dynasty and America have vast similarities except for several differences. However, owing to the large differences upon the aesthetic thinking, aesthetic concept,aesthetic bias and philosophical foundation in Chinese and American, the essential differences are certainly exist.The image of plants between the poetry of Tang Dynasty and that of America in the 20 century are analyzed with the help of the pre-achievements and the statistical method, which has been classify in to 3 types. What has been find out is that: the plant images in American Poems at the beginning of the Twentieth Century coincide largely with the poetry in Tang Dynasty. Not only in the selection of the plant images, but in the techniques of poetry creation and the construction of poetic circles can we peep the shadow of Chinese classical poetry.The causes of the differences in the Image selection of poems in Tang Dynasty and the 20 Century's America are set in the following 5 aspects: geographical environment, lifestyle,philosophical thinking, religious mythology, and aesthetic psychology.The Imagist Poets in the early 20 Century of American has assimilated the inspiration, the theory of image, and the prosody from Tang poetry. They abandoned the artificial style in the composition of poetry, which opened up a new era for American poets.
