The active role of the translator as an essential component in the translation process has long been neglected by the traditional translation studies. This thesis draws on hermeneutic and reception aesthetics to illustrate the creative action of the translation in the process of literary translation. Through the analysis of the translation of Fu Sheng Liu Ji, the author elaborates the creativity of the translator is reflected in such aspects as, the determination of translation strategies, the choice of the source text, the setting of translation purpose, the comprehension and interpretation of the text and the artistic creativity at the linguistic level, etc..Hermeneutics has innate relationship with translation study. Translation theory originated from modern phylosophic hermeneutics holds that literary translation is interpretation. Literary works and the translator have their respective horizons; translators of different periods understand and interprete the works with their own horizons to realize the diversity of interpretation. Therefore, the process of literary translation is not only the process of fusion of horizons but also the process of interpretation. Six Chapters of a Floating Life is Lin's most successful translation to show his translation grounding. The writing style of Six Chapters of a Floating Life and the unique life attitude, value, temperament and aesthetic sentiment of Chinese literators catered for Lin's life attitude and character. So their fusion of horizons was reached.Reception aesthetics stresses the interaction between the reader and the text based on hermeneutics. The openness of texts and the importance of the role of readers'participation are accentuated. Six Chapters of a Floating Life translated by Lin Yutang causes intense resonance of western readers, which proves the acceptance of creative expression of the translator by western readers.
