In today's world, literary translation, a recreation of literary art, hasbecome a more and more important field of study. The researchers oftranslation studies home and abroad have done many researches in literarytranslation. Based on these researches, the author of this thesis makes a furtherstudy of literary translation, which circles on the factor of translator. Theauthor holds that the translator, as the most important participant in the processof translation, enjoys the status of translation subject. The exerting of thetranslator's subjectivity in literary translation is the only way to approach theessence of literary work and thus successfully represent the original.Hermeneutics and aesthetics of reception, as the two most influentialcritical theories of literature provide theoretical bases for this thesis. The threeprinciples of"historicity of understanding","the effect-history principles"andthe"fusion of horizons"of philosophical hermeneutics have greatlyenlightened the study on the translator's subjectivity. The"appeal structure"and"text"in aesthetics of reception also illustrate the inevitability andimportance of translator's subjectivity. The present thesis makes researches inthe translator's subjectivity in literary translation, based on the theories ofphilosophical hermeneutics and aesthetics of reception. It analyzes theconnotation of translator's subjectivity, its manifestations and restrictions.This thesis consists of seven chapters. The first chapter is introduction, in this chapter the author gives a brief retrospective study of different approachesin translation studies and summaries that the translator's status is visualizedstep by step and the study of translator becomes a heated topic but remains tobe further explored and studied. This thesis is a further exploration in this fieldbased on the philosophical hermeneutics and aesthetics of reception. ChapterTwo is an introductory part, in which a brief explanation is given about thethree paradigms of translation studies. The author concludes that the translatorhas gradually come to the limelight of translation studies and his subjectivitydeserves more and more attention. In Chapter Three the author studies theconnotation of"subject"and"subjectivity"in both its philosophical meaningand its implications in translation. In Chapter Four, the author introduces indetail the chief principles of philosophical hermeneutics and aesthetics ofreception and their enlightenment on the translator as the subject of translation.In Chapter Five the nature of literary translation is expounded based on thetheories of hermeneutics and aesthetics of reception. In Chapter Six the authorstudies the manifestations of translator's subjectivity in literary translation inthree aspects, namely in the process of cultural transformation, in stylerepresentation and in artistic ideorealm conveyance. Based on the abovechapters, in Chapter Seven the author further expounds the restrictions oftranslator's subjectivity. The restrictions come mainly from two sources: thesubjective factors of the translator and the objective factors of the ST itself andthe readers. The author hopes that this thesis is beneficial to the furthering ofour country's literature translation studies.
