As a basic traditional Chinese philosophical concept, the art of image, which has a wide scope and is broadly applied in practice, is an artistic form and aesthetic thinking peculiar to the Chinese art, exerting a significant influence on Chinese artistic creation. To contemporary artists, the art of image can be placed on par with visual art and abstract art. The art of painted sculpture, a treasure in traditional Chinese culture, plays an important role in the development of human civilization and has left its mark on history. To study the relation between the beauty of image and the art of painted sculpture in Shuanglin Temple, is of realistic value to the appreciation and creation of painted sculpture. The great influence of the beauty of image exerted on Chinese aesthetic thinking, is widely acknowledged in the academic circle. However, the relation between the art of image and painted sculpture has seldom been touched upon by scholars. This paper starts with the topic of culture, then studies the definitions of the art of image, and based on a systematic examination of the painted sculpture in Shuanglin Temple, discusses the role and influence of the beauty of image on the traditional Chinese art.Compared with the aesthetic standards of the western art, the Chinese art has always been an embodiment of the concept that man is an integral part of nature, displaying consistency of one's innermost feel with the manifestation of nature in both the mode of cognition and the mode of thinking, becoming the quintessence of traditional Chinese art with the absorption of common thoughts and feelings reached through "image" internalization and with the inclusion of individual temperament, and acting as the fundamental character to differentiate the aesthetic standards of the Chinese art from those of the western art which is known for its treating of a person and the outside world as two separate objects. The constitution, modeling and mental activities in the creation process of painted sculpture are permeated with the concept of image beauty. There is a saying that goes, "with nature in one's hand, and to measure the outside world with one's mind, the power of one's mind is immeasurable". The constitution of painted sculpture manifests the structure and the inner meaning of image; the modeling puts into practice all artistic languages of modeling, and tries its best to transfer the spirit and create the image of the object, thus ensuring the whole image of the sculpture a reflection of human mind and spirit. The painted sculpture in Shuanglin Temple showcases the smooth flow of creativity unimpeded by the boundaries among mind, image, form and spirit, and displays the fundamental artistic spirit of "with mind as its base, image its medium, and form its application", catering to concept of image beauty that "to erect an image is to express one's mind ".This paper tries to use the term "the art of image", a traditional Chinese concept, to study the art of painted sculpture, which has not been covered by the term in ancient times, so as to demonstrate the cultural tread and connection of image and painted sculpture, and pointing out especially the Chinese identity and color of the art of image.
