The Study On The Communicative Strategies Employed By Chinese Learners In Different Social Environment

CSs are the skills used by learners to finish the communication when faced with some difficulties. Many researchers thought CSs are good for the learning.The researchers in the field of foreign language have done lots of researches about CSs since 1970s. However, the research of CSs about teaching Chinese as a second language seemed to be lacking.Through quantitative studies on the CSs used by foreign students in different social environment, the research discussed three questions:the type and frequency of the employment of CSs, the relationship between individual factors and the employment of CSs, and the relationship between individual factors and the employment of CSs. Through the research we have two main findings:First, foreign students in different environment didn't use CSs frequently. They used more avoidance strategies than achievement strategies. Appealing strategy is the most popular type while frequency of using the native language strategy is lowest.Secondly, the study shows that learners with different environmental factors and individual factors employ different kinds of CSs. The differences between male students and female ones are same. The differences between the one who has foreign language learning experience and the one who has not are same. However, for the students in the target language environment, the higher the language proficiency of the learners, the lower frequency of the employment of CSs. For the students not in the target language environment, the students on low level and high level used more CS. For the students in the target language environment, the one who wants to know more about China and Chinese use less CSs. For the students not in the target language environment, the one who wants to live in China use less CSs.The implications on the employment of CSs of foreign students in different social environment may lie in that:First, we discussed the relationship between more environmental factors and the employment of CSs. Secondly, the relationship between more individual factors and the employment of CSs. Thirdly, the study also provides more suggestions to the training of CSs.
