Quentin Tarantino is one of the most influential film makers in modern America. His works have won the awards not only from variety of film festival, but also at the box office. Most of his works are written and directed all by himself, which assists Tarantino in creating his own style and to gain the fondness from his fans.Also being regarded as an art film director constantly, Quentin Tarantino is interested in making genre films. He has devoted himself to pursuing his artistic preference and aesthetic taste. Meanwhile, he has tried his best to make sure that the audience can be entertained by his movies. These two goals intersect at one point the exploration and the display and the utilization of the instincts. This thesis tried to figure out the following questions. Which part of Tarantino's works embodied the implication of instincts? Which techniques did the director use to display these instincts that made the movies so special? And what role did these techniques play in the aim of helping the audience in releasing the stress from the block which restricts the instincts?The first chapter mainly discusses the expression of life instinct which contains ego instinct and sex instinct shown in Tarantino's works. The second chapter tries to expound the expression of death instinct presented by Tarantino and to probe into how violence was expressed to release the death instinct of the audience. The last chapter was about the plot writing and the character design which highlighted the resultant force from the life and death instincts, and analyzed its significance of the text of the movie and the psyche of the audience.
