| This paper analyzes six works of American writer Philip Roth, which are Kepesh novel--The Professor of Desire, The Breast and The Dying Animal, America Trilogy--American Pastoral, I Married a Communist and The Human Stain. The desire theme of the six works is the main study perspective.The first chapter shows different kinds of desire in the fictions, and analyzes its deeply drive. And from the syntagmatic relation and paradigmatic relation of desire symbol to analyses further about the transformation of desire theme and the complication of desire connotation.The historical reason of desire production is the main idea of the second chapter. Quoted Lacan and other theorists' theory, and combining with the novels' text analyzes the desire from lack and other's desire. And all this also appeared in social, historical, political and cultural background.Study all the six novels, we could find that desire produce from body, then grow so strong to swallow the subject. When desire can't be satisfied on body, it will be focus on other's view to find where "I" is. Desire transform in the broader social world, and become more concealed. In the process of finding subjectivity of the self, subject gets lost in other's view at last. Finally, subject returns to the body nature, completing the desire Ouroboros.In the music of tragedy and horn of death, desire temporarily and finally stops for a moment, subject obtains eternal regression and be transcended. |
