Based on the life of Chen Hong—the pioneer of Movement of New Music, this thesis aims to do some analysis and research in his early music activities (1929-1949) and achievements.Chen Hong is a famous music theorist, music educator, as well as composer and translator. He is also a pioneer of professional music education and modern higher normal music education in China. As a music theorist, he has embarked on writing and editing in the early 1930s and published many theoretical works as well as literary comments in various newspapers and magazines throughout the country. His practice has not only provided objective and original insights for the development of new music and New Music Movement but also contributed much to the theoretical formation in modern musical fields. As a music educator, Chen Hong has taught and was responsible for heavy academic work in Guangdong Theatre Research Institute, Guangzhou Private Music Institute, Shanghai National Music Academy, Nanjing National Music Institute, Nanjing Normal University. He has been committed himself to China's professional music education and is a forerunner of china's modern higher normal education. As a composer, before the full outbreak of war, he created songs for anti-Japanese war that inspired the people and were very popular among the common people. After that, he has created a few piano music, art song and chorus. As a translator, by employing his solid language skills, cultural training and expertise, he has translated a large number of works, which has magnificent historical significance in promoting the communication and exchange between Chinese and Western cultures.In addition to introduction and conclusion, this thesis is composed of four chapters. Chapter one gives a brief introduction of Chen Hong's life. Chapter two focuses on the analysis of Chen Hong's profession music education activities. Since he returned from abroad in 1929, he has threw himself into the music education without any hesitation, working diligently in Guangdong Theatre Research Institute, Guangzhou Private Music Institute, Shanghai National Music Academy and Nanjing National Music Institute in the order of precedence. In the exploration of enduring great hardships, he has made outstanding contribution to China's professional music education. Chapter three mainly concerns the textual analysis of Chen Hong's songs for anti-Japanese war, pieces of piano music and art songs. Based on a comprehensive study on Chen's creation, he has basically adopted the music means of western Classicism and Romanticism Period to convey Chinese people's strong wish for national independence in his musical creation, which is endowed with profound ideological content and artistic quality. Chapter IV focuses on Chen Hong's new perspectives on national music, new music and Movement of new music. He has always insisted on creating new music different from traditional music by means of learning from western musical technology and experience and combining Chinese musical culture factors. At the same time, he has regarded the music practical activities such as musical compositon, professional music education, music theory study and issuing music magazines as important components of New Music Movement. Chen Hong is undoubtedly the pioneer and practitioner of China's new music movement.However, for various historical reasons, Chen Hong has long been out of the academic focus and attention. This paper attempts to explore the truth of Mr. Zhang's music career by analyzing his activities and thoughts. The study on the perspectives of New Music Movement is of great significance for both appreciating Chen Hong himself and for classifying the historical materials in New Music Movement.
