Chen Tianhe(1911.12.8-1955.10.23), whose original name was Chen Qidong, came from Wenzhou in Zhejiang. He is one of modern music history accomplished music educator and composer. Chen is one of the Four Famous Students of Huang Zi, who is an early founder of professional music education in China. The Four Famous Students include He Luting, Jiang Dingxian, Liu Xuean and Chen Tianhe. From the beginning of1980s, the studies of Chen have developed successively. As time goes by, many newer and more comprehensive historical materials are found gradually. Therefore, it is very important to further organize the historical materials, re-examine the status of Chen’s in Chinese modern music history and reappear Chen’s historical appearance.This article is based on Chen’s middle-late life, creative works and change of thoughts, which are not involved in previous studies redundantly. Using historical materials and manuscripts as support points, it organizes Chen’s track of music education, explains his music theories and restores his life and changes of creative thoughts after1949to restore Chen’s historical appearance comprehensively and provide some valuable historical conclusions for the study of Chinese modern music history. This article has three chapters. The first chapter organizes and analyses Chen’s situation in the studies of Chinese modern music history. The second chapter focuses on the music education of Chen’s and his few music theories. The last chapter represents the situation of Chen’s choice, life and creation after1949.The development of creation, education history and academic thoughts of a musician has a lot to do with his individual fate. Organizing and analyzing Chen’s music education, music theories, work experience and creation after liberation can broaden the horizon of studies. It can also evaluate his musical achievements and academic contribution comprehensively and accurately in the studies of Chinese modern music history to fill the blank of the previous studies.
