The Bible has exerted a far-reaching influence upon western culture and even upon world culture. The Chinese translation of the Bible has a long history and many Chinese versions have witnessed China's glorious translation history. Among various Chinese versions of The Bible, the Chinese Union Version (CUV) is the most influential and widely-read one. In the spreading process of recent 90 years, Chinese language has been changing all the time; however, the CUV is still the best choice of Chinese versions for both Christians and non-Christians up to this day. No matter in religion or in language, the influence of the CUV can be compared with that of the King James Version (KJV) in English, which suggests its special features and unique value. Thus, the research on translation methods adopted in CUV holds a great importance to both the re-translation of the Bible and the translation of other cross-cultural works.Except for the introduction and the conclusion, the present thesis is made up of four chapters:Chapter one presents a review of Chinese Bible translation history of more than one thousand years. Some important Chinese versions of the Bible which played important roles in the translation history will be mentioned in this chapter, such as Nestorian Version in the Tang Dynasty, Bassett Version, Morrison Version, Chinese Union Version, Today's Chinese Version, etc. The CUV dates back to the end of 19th century and beginning of 20th century, Chinese language experienced a transformation from classical Chinese to modern vernacular Chinese at that time. It is self-evident that the historical background and political factors of the day produces a great impact on the CUV to a large extent. Broadly speaking, the publication of the CUV happened to coincide with the Modern Vernacular Chinese Movement which is advocated by intellectual circles, thereby laid the foundations for the widespread of the CUV.Chapter two aims to provide an introduction to the development history of foreignization translation theory. Debate on Foreignization Translation and Domestication Translation has long been a hot issue, and opinions of Chinese and Western intellectuals vary from person to person on this contradiction. Based on the above condition, the author puts forward her own opinion on the connotation evolvement of Foreignization Translation and points out the advantages of this translation method and its influences on culture.Chapter three presents a detailed analysis of the application of Foreignization Translation strategy in the CUV. The analysis starts with the enumeration of religious values, esthetic values and value of the text itself brought by the foreignized CUV, as well as the practical application of Foreignization Translation strategy in the CUV.Chapter four is devoted to list the influences of Foreignization Translation of CUV on Chinese literature. With the widespread of the CUV, the value system of many scholars and writers has changed following closely. Many modern and contemporary writers in China compose their works by frequently adopting the biblical themes, allusions and even the scriptures. Thus, various images, lexicons, and allusions of the Bible pour into many modern and contemporary literary works. At last, the paper comes to a conclusion that, the deliberate reserve of alien culture in the CUV forms its unique linguistic fascination.Ever since its publication, its influence on Chinese literature also contributes to its position of authority. It is foreseeable that the CUV will be the most popular Chinese version in the long-term future. Thus, in the context of globalization, it is wise for translators to adopt Foreignization Translation strategy in their translation works, which can improve cultural integration and coexistence.
