The Acceptance And Influence Of "Salome" In Chinese Modern And Contemporary Literature

Salome was originally a Jewish princess in the Bible New Testament and few people knew who she is.As the puppet of Queen Herodias and the criminal who murdered Saint John,she wandered in the in the dust of history,silent and pale.It is too difficult for her to catch people's attention.Yet,until the end of the th century,under the promotion of the huge and grand ideological trend of Aestheticism and Decadence,the British writer,Wilde,and the illustrator,Aubrey Beardsley,refilled the rich soul into Salome with an aesthetical way,which freed her from the thin and poor historical image.She became the most reliable representative for Aestheticism and Decadence with indomitable persistent spirit for desire of love,dismissive rebellious spirit for morality and outmoded conventions,and unique and morbid mysterious beauty.Salome,the most representative literary work for the ideological trend of Aestheticism and Decadence,was popular for a time after being introduced to China in the early th century,and had an indelible influence on the development of modern Chinese literature.While reviewing the influence of the drama,Salome,on the Chinese literary world,we could conclude that,on the one hand,it was conscious assimilation and sublation for the thought of Aestheticism and Decadence by Chinese intellectuals;on the other hand,due to specific cultural environment and historical background,its essence and connotation of aestheticism was distorted so that Chinese authors held different interpretations for it.This paper tries to sort out the process of introduction and acceptance of Salome in China and discusses reasons why it is popular among Chinese modern writers,the significance of construction of Chinese new literature,and the cultural connotation in contemporary literary works,which can be summarized into the following points:In the introduction part,I firstly illustrate the nature of aestheticism and tragedy of the drama,Salome,explore the reasons why Salome can become the representative work of aestheticism and the classic in the history of drama in the world,and sort out the research status and problems to be solved for this topic to draw forth the purpose of this paper.In the first chapter,I verify and describe the process of the introduction of Salome into modern China,discuss the different attitudes of the Europeans and Japanese to Salome,and clarify the huge significance of Japan as a bridge which links the ideological trend of Western aestheticism and modern Chinese culture field.In addition,the influence of the illustration,which was drawn by British painter,Aubrey Beardsley,for Salome,and was full of “stimulus force” and sensuality,on the cultural activities of some Chinese writers is also paid attention to.In the second chapter,I focus on the spread of Salome in Chinese literary world after the mid-s.Moreover,I investigate the reasons which caused the spread of "Salome" in the Chinese literary world to change from flourish to decadence in three aspects of ideological trend of new romanticism,ideological trend of left wing culture and urban modern culture,and the cultural significance of being vulgarized and popularized in urban life.The third chapter is the key of this paper.Through combining with specific modern literary works,this paper investigates the reference and imitation of creation of works on Salome by modern writers,analyzes the artistic effect it brings and unique connotation in works,and explores the individual mentality and aesthetic concepts of authors behind reference,and its significance to the construction of modern Chinese literature.In the fourth chapter,I extract elements in the martial arts novels of Jin Yong,feminist novel of Xu Xiaobin and the “Salome” in the Temple of Longevity of Wang Xiaobo,and,from different acceptance conditions of the modern and contemporary writers for Salome,view the differences of modern and contemporary Chinese writers in understanding Salome under different contexts of times.In the conclusion part,on the basis of summarizing the influence of Salome,from the perspective of interdisciplinary,I further reveal the unique connotation of Salome in the postmodern context with the film,Face,of Cai Mingliang,highlighting the immutability and classic nature of the value of artistic life in Salome...
