| News discourse is an important part of discourse language study. Along with the importance of sports news, the sports news research has been noticed by many researchers. And the news headline is a special discourse type and an important part of news research, which attracts deeper and wider researches.In order to attract readers to read the detailed reports, or transfer the most important messages clearly when the information was too immense, the news reporters used some pragmatic strategies in these news headlines. Pragmatic strategy is one kind of means to achieve communicational purposes and this kind of means was generated by using some linguistic structures in certain contexts by the language users.Sports are closely related to people's social and cultural lives. Olympic Games are a link to politics, economy, and culture, etc. More and more Olympics news are not only about the matches themselves any more, they are also connected with other areas such as society, culture, and politics, which are reflected in the Olympics news headlines. Because of the differences between China and America, the news content and the way the reporter reported the news are also different, thus making the Olympics news headlines distinguished from each other.This thesis consists of six major parts. The first part serves as an introduction to the research base and methods. The second part makes a literature review of the sports news headlines at domestics and abroad. The third part outlines the theoretical background and the theories are cooperative principles, politeness theory and deixis. The fourth part analyzes the applications of pragmatic strategies in sports news headlines. The fifth part make a further analysis of sports news headlines from a cultural perspective and the last part is the conclusion which summaries this thesis and points out some limitations and suggestions for future research.
