The Study Of Chinese Traditional Decorative Elements Applied In The Modern Interior Design

Chinese traditional decoration elements can be regarded as an endless resource for modern interior designing. They have evolved throughout the whole Chinese history, imprinted with distinct esthetic customs and traditional culture connotations. Therefore, exploring and extracting these decoration elements from Chinese traditional art, to promote native characteristics in modern interior design, has profound value of culture preservation and positive influence on practical profession.From the perspective of history, the paper defined the concept of traditional decoration elements and analyzed its composition. The elements are classified into four categories:traditional basic patterns, depiction patterns, traditional colors, and Chinese characters. The paper then presented the origins and meanings of certain classic elements, and analyzed their composition methods and application conditions, to extract the inner cultural connotation, which includes totem worship, divine protection, nature respect, and golden mean.The paper analyzed the application methods of traditional elements in contemporary interior design, which include simple repetition, extraction and variation, and cultural atmosphere construction. The paper summarized the reference values that traditional cultural connotation casts on contemporary interior design, such as materializing of esthetic ideology, representing of good will, principles of human-orientation, rules of contradictory and unification. The paper suggests more consideration for humanities design principles besides application techniques, to explore the possibility of integrating traditional decoration elements succeeding with contemporary interior design renovation. There are four reference rules for enhancing Chinese characteristics in contemporary interior design profession:first, to modernize the application of traditional elements; second, to localize advanced western design ideas; third, to individuate the study of outstanding works; fourth, to popularize education of traditional culture and to promote public esthetic ideology.Last, the paper used design projects that the author has participated in, to present the specific approaches that how to apply Chinese traditional decoration elements into contemporary interior design process, and to indicate that how do Chinese traditional decoration elements promote the embodiment of regional culture.
