Fast-food has penetrated into people’s daily life as the pace of modern life was getting faster and faster. Meanwhile people need more mental relaxation and adjustment, and thus have higher standards to living environment, living and working in the society which characterized with pressure and competition. Because of this above, fast-food restaurants not only need to serve for the basic function of the dining but also need to strive for the leisure and entertainment functions which is achieved by conveying some sort of cultural emotion to satisfy the spiritual needs of the people through the decorative design. However, the interior design industry of fast-food restaurant facing the masses actually didn’t get a due concern and failed to build its own corporate image and brand. Besides that, the present interior decoration design trending towards stereotype or simplification would give people an impression of boring and lack of originality. What’s worse, some small fast-food restaurants are decorated poorly and short of essential originality and aesthetics. As a consequence, how to get out of the stereotyped misunderstanding of interior decoration design of fast-food restaurant, and then to create a bran-new mode with personality, distinctive theme, and cultural connotation, has become an important problem during the development of the fast-food restaurants in China.In this paper, the theory of visual symbols is applied to the interior decoration design of fast-food restaurant, so as to explore new ideas and methods of interior design of fast-food restaurant. Firstly, by introduction the concept of symbols, the characteristics of the visual symbols and the historical evolution of the visual symbols, the paper expounds the significance of the theory of visual symbols to the interior design of fast-food restaurant. Secondly, the paper researches on the classification of the visual symbols and respectively analyzes the application of image symbols, directive symbols, symbolic signs and color symbols in the interior decoration design of fast-food restaurant. Base on the research results above, the paper summarizes the design principle, creative design modes and design procedures during the application of visual symbols in the interior design of fast-food restaurant, which lays a solid foundation for the subsequent case design of the interior decoration design of fast-food restaurant. Finally, the paper attempts to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed theory by carrying interior decoration design practice on California beef noodle king fast food restaurant, thereby combines theoretical analysis and practical case to improve the paper.
