With the enhancement of English in social and cultural communication, the ability of learning and communication will be increasingly required. English practical writing is paid attention to as an important aspect in written communication gradually. Therefore, English practical writing should be improved in the public English teaching. The aim of our study is to cultivate the ability to study automatically by investigation in the situation of non-English major's English Practical Writing in Inner Mongolia University. Many problems are found in the survey. To encourage the students to learn automatically, meta-cognition knowledge and the traditional writing pattern are made use of together to create a new model for English practical writing. And then a lot of experiments should be done in order to justify the efficiency. Finally it will be expected to be so useful that it can be available in practical learning.Firstly two questionnaires were used to investigate the situation of English Practical Writing Course. The first one is investigation in English Practical writing in college and the other one is investigation in Meta-cognition. According to the data, records of interview and test, it was known that the significance of the practical writing could be realized and the content of practical writing also could be arranged. However, the knowledge was not complete, which was still poured into the students directly by repeating the practice. Although it is easy to accept the knowledge for students, it is hard to use in practice really. There is another problem. That is the confusion of Chinese practical writing and English practical writing. During the process of writing, the meta-cognition had been learned of by the students, but it could be used in practical learning well. They are negative. The teacher-centered teaching model is still mainly used in our university.In order to cope with the problems, the three-step model has been suggested, i.e. LKWI-L'C-APL". Traditional writing teaching model was improved by referring to meta-cognition. Three-step pattern has three steps. The first one is LKWI, whose aim is to prepare for the task: L (learn) requires the basic knowledge of practical writing. K (know) will encourage to summarize what they learned in the first part. W (want) asks them to make clear the goal. I (Identify) will help them to predict the difficulties in the task. The second step is L'C. It is the process to finish the first writing. L'(list)demands students to list all the information. C (Conformity) is to combine the content and form together. The last one is APL". A(Amend)asks to correct the first-writing. P(Perfect)is to make it perfect. L"(Look) will recall and conclude the whole process of writing.After one-term experiment, it attained the results expected. It justified the hypothesis before the experiment. Firstly, it proved that Three-step pattern is helpful for the improvement of English practical writing. Secondly, three-step pattern is able to help students in cultivating the ability to learn automatically.
