The object of this study is a unique example in Tibetan history: The Gar Tongsten family's near half-century's assistant role in governing the Tibet kingdom.According to the theories of dialectical materialism and historical materialism, the article makes full use of DunHuang Ancient Tibetan literature, Tibetan stone record, Tibetan and Chinese historical documents and folklore. Basing on the academic research at home and abroad, the paper focus on three areas, and discusses the whole story of Gar family'assistant role in governing Tibet in the history.The first part proves the history of Gar family's ancestors, and studies political career of Gar Tongtsen in detail from following points. At first, under the historical background of sharp contradictions between the old and new nobility, Songtsan Gambo intentionally supported and raised the stasis of Gar family; Secondly, from consideration of Gar family's social condition, there were two historical figures with distinctive personality and remarkable ability in the family, it is under their training and on the basis of their political foundation, Gar Tongsten's great legendary life was created. Meanwhile, the article sorts out the limited historical data, arranges Gar Tongsten's early political achievements in chronological order, and effectively refutes various historical reverie that Gar Tongsten became the minister after exposing the treason of Qiongbo bang se.The second part of this paper begins from Gar family's social background in the mid-seventh century and discusses Gar Tongsten's smooth performance in assistant role in governing Tibet in the history. He not only found out - the suitable League system, improved the Tibetan legal system, but also actively implemented the strategy of foreign expansion. Also from tense relationship between Tang and Tibet, the article discusses the historical reason for Gar Tsen Nyian dom bo's successful inheriting of his father's undertaking and explores the power struggle within the family after GarTongsten's deathThe third part of the article concludes that during the period of Gar Tsen Nyian dom bo and minister ling, it is the peak and decline period for Gar family's power. The internal power struggle within the family not only broke the family's power control, but also causes them to lose their former monopoly authority in Tibetan League. Finally, the paper analyzes historical reason for Gar family's crime from four points: damage to the royal family's dignity, hatred and envy of other nobles, hostile attitude of other neighboring nations, and competition between the Tridusong and minister ling.
