Acomparativeanalysis On Three Chinese Translation Versions Of Wuthering Heights

With the development of translation studies, the cultural background gradually has been included in the scope of translation study, such as the impact of ideology, the impact of post-colonialism, ethnic discrimination and the impact of feminism. Feminist research in the process of continuous development has realized that history and culture factors cannot be ignored. After successfully turning to the culture direction, translation and feminism will inevitably affect each other. In recent years feminist research is a hot topic in the field of humanities, which, compared with colorful female literature, can only be regarded as being in the initial stage and the results of feminist translation studies only scatter in some collected works. However, the unique perspective of feminism and the sharp criticism has sparked the passion of translation researchers to explore on this topic.There are profound and complex gender awareness and subconscious undercurrent in and behind the language, and gender language is the manifestation of these two undercurrents. Male/female language refers to the kind of language that which is used by men or women, especially which is characteristic of gender differences. In terms of language style, women tend to use more standard language than men. Linguist Lakoff has summarized six categories of language use which are sharply different between men and women: lexical distinctions such as color terms, strong versus weak expletives,"women's"versus"neutral"adjectives, tag questions, question intonation with statement syntax, and strength of directive speech acts.Under the background of cultural transition, the Chinese translators more or less are affected, but it is difficult to judge the extent of the effect. The three translated versions chosen here are respectively translated by Yang Yi (female), Fang Ping (male) and Zhang Ling (female). All of them are successful translators and are loved by Chinese readers. They have their own features and strong points in translation style, linguistic expression and aesthetic standard. But here the author wants to emphasize that translator's gender has its influence on the translation, especially on the translation of the work written by female writer who has feminist awareness; the author wants to further emphasize that when a female translator who has feminist consciousness translates female writer's works, she would try her best and take some strategies to make the female's voice heard and to make the identity of translator visible. As a female translator Zhang Ling has violated the characteristic of women language in language use, such as preference to standard language, preference to frequent use of sentence final particles, avoiding vulgar or coarse words, and description of feelings. All that can indicate that Zhang Ling did not bow the neck to patriarchal language, neither did she conceal her real gender with a mask of standard forms. She just freely spoke in a feminine tone and out of her own habit, revealing her gender quite naturally and unaffectedly.Feminist translators subvert the traditional concept of being faithful to the original. In terms of being faithful, they are neither faithful to the original author nor faithful to the reader of target culture, but to their own reading. Since the translation standard is faithful to translators own reading, and translation is not the mechanical reproduction of original intention, then translation is a creative process. Through the analysis of Zhang Ling's version of Wuthering Heights we can see that she manifests her identity in translation, is faithful to her own reading and creates a new meaning of the translation text.
