Language is the most important tool of communication. English is the most influential international language, which is widely-used in many fields, such as international politics, military, economy, science, culture, trade and transportation. Nowadays, China plays an increasingly important role in international affairs, so the communication between China and other countries has become closer and closer. Therefore, English, as a"world language",is just like a bridge between China and other countries. And inevitably, there are higher and higher requirements for English learning and teaching.However, the English level of vocational college students is far from satisfactory. Mainly because of negative transfer of mother tongue, Chinese culture and thinking modes, many kinds of Chinglish expressions occur in vocational college students'language output. Chinglish has now become a major obstacle to effective communication, which runs riot in spoken English and written English. Chinglish, without doubt, has become a headache both for English teachers and students. Therefore, improving their English level and minimizing Chinglish has an important and far-reaching significance.There are some studies at home and abroad, attaching either theoretical or practical importance to the research on Chinglish, but there is no systematic study on Chinglish and no general agreement on its definition, manifestations and causes. Moreover, their studies mainly focused on Chinglish in Translation, little research was made into Chinglish in Writing, not to mention Chinglish in vocational college students'English writings.This research, with error analysis and language transfer as the theoretical basis, Chinglish in vocational college students'English writings will be investigated at different levels. The author attempts to conduct a comprehensive analysis on its situation, causes and implications for English learning and teaching. It is hoped that the analysis and implications will contribute to better English teaching and learning in vocational colleges. This thesis is composed of six chapters. Chapter one is introduction, including research background, purpose and significance of the research and the structure of the thesis. Chapter two is literature review, which covers a brief review of studies on Chinglish, the definition of Chinglish, the differences between Chinglish and China English, error analysis and language transfer. Chapter three is research design and methodology. The subjects are seventy-six sophomore students from Shandong College of Traditional Chinese Medicine. 628 Chinglish expressions are chosen from the subjects'304 English compositions, which are classified into five levels: substance, lexis, grammar, discourse and culture. Chapter four presents the results of the study and further analysis of Chinglish expressions and causes of Chinglish. Chapter five provides some pedagogical implications for English learning and teaching. Chapter six serves as a conclusion with its limitation.The major findings are as follows:Firstly, Chinglish is really a serious problem in vocational college students'English writings.Secondly, Chinglish does exist at all levels of language in vocational college students'English writings and Chinglish at the lexical and grammatical levels are the most noticeable.Thirdly, mother tongue interference and ignorance of cross-culture awareness are the major causes of Chinglish. Learners'English learning habits and traditional teaching methods also give rise to Chinglish.Based on the above-mentioned findings, the author proposes corresponding solutions to improve the students'English and to diminish Chinglish.1) Listing and explaining the Chinglish samples in vocational college students'English writings, which will help the students realize their Chinglish errors and do self-correction.2) Strengthening awareness of cultural differences in English teaching.3) Applying Interactive Approach to English teaching to improve traditional teaching method.4) Helping the students to form a good habit of English learning.5) Having a proper attitude toward Chinglish: Chinglish is an inevitable and necessary part of the English learning process.
