English, as a widely used language around the world, is playing an importantrole in international communication. Therefore, there are many English learners inChina. English and Chinese are members of different language families and thus therules, principles as well as idiomatic habits of the two languages are quite different.These distinctions inevitably influence Chinese learners’ English acquisition, leadingto the formation of Chinglish.Researches on the mother tongue interferences in the field of second languageacquisition are scattered in articles both at home and abroad. Based on the previousstudy, the author designs a C-E translation test and chooses Chinese universitystudents who have passed CET-6to do the test. Then the author compares theChinglish in students’ translation and the corresponding correct English forms to findthe difference between them.The author does further investigation of these differences by adopting thecontrastive analysis and error analysis and finally figures out the Chinese idiomatichabits that lead to the formation of Chinglish from the perspectives of lexicon andsyntax.This thesis consists of five chapters. Chapter1is the introduction of the thesis. Itillustrates the purpose and the research approaches adopted in the study. Besides,there is an introduction of the structure of the thesis. Chapter2is the literature review.Based on the previous study of the comparison between Chinglish and China English,the author views the Chinglish is a kind of English that is formed by applying theChinese idiomatic rules improperly. It bears the Chinese idiomatic features and hardlycan be accepted or understood by native speakers. The author introduces the previoustheoretical achievement in the field of second language acquisition and the theories of language transfer, contrastive analysis as well as error analysis, for the purpose ofhaving a better understanding of the theories and approaches that are adopted in thethesis. Chapter3is the methodology. The author illustrates the design of the C-Etranslation test paper and the data collection. The author finds the differences betweenChinglish made by Chinese students and the corresponding correct English forms byanalyzing the data obtained from the test. Chapter4is the core of the thesis, theauthor does further investigation of the analysis results obtained from chapter3fromtwo perspectives: lexicon and syntax. Finally the author figures out the Chineseidiomatic habits that lead to the formation of Chinglish at a higher frequency. Chapter5is the conclusion. The author points out the findings as well as the limitations of thethesis.
