Hunan Cuisine Culture And Its Effect On Tableware Design

Tableware is the necessity of the house life. The history of it is as long as human cuisine culture. With the development and evolution of the cuisine culture, the tableware has also been improved gradually. As the epitome of specific culture and artistic feature, the tableware can be easily distinguished by its own characteristics in different times and regions.Hunan Cuisine, under the influence of its unique history, geographic, and cultural background, and with the evolvement over thousands of years, is praised for its distinctive style and characteristics both in and abroad. With the development and evolution of Huxiang styled cooking, the unique style of the container and tableware of the Huxiang cusine has also been shaped.The thesis tries to discuss the influence of the Huxiang cuisine culture over the development of the tableware from design perspective, and propose solutions of tableware design in line with Huxiang cuisine culture.The definition of Huxiang cuisine culture is elaborated and systematic analysis of its development has been made. Inferences of the cuisine culture in ancient time have been made based on historical data, the cultural relic and the food specimen excavated.Based on literature review and documentation of field study, the shape, color, pattern, material and function of the Huxiang tableware in different times (for instance, ancient pottery, bronze in Xia, Shang and Zhou Dynasty, Chinaware in Han Dynasty, lacquerwork and Changsha Kiln in Tang Dynasty and so on) have been analyzed from the design perspective. Innovative mode of designing tableware with both traditional and modern features in the global context has been discussed.Finally, based on the previous discussion and conclusion, pre-practice of designing tableware in line with the characteristics of the Huxiang region cuisine culture has been made.
