Literature creates geography. Suzhou in Literature is different from Suzhou in the classics records. There are more "subjectivity" about Suzhou in the literatry words,while in the classic records Suzhou is mechanically written about its history and culture. The former one is a writer's experience and identity of the city, while the later one is stored as text data. Therefore,there is a connection between the writer and the city. The writer's experience and the aesthetic concept of the city become one of the sources of Suzhou city's cultural significance. This paper is to make a rearch on the modern prose writers'memory and imagination of Suzhou city from the angle of the relations between city and people.First of all, modern prose writers's logic of imagination and starting point of memory of Suzhou city are determined by three factors, one is the social and cultural environment of the times, another one what is required by modern prose writers themselves and the third one is the imagination and memory or the characteristecs of Suzhou itself and its status in cities of the country.The paper sums up the different characteristics in prose writers writing of Suzhou in both the former and the latter half of the 20th century to prove the decisive function of the three factors mentioned above.Second, to search the poetic quality is a very important content in prose writers' writing of Suzhou. For the poetic writing, the study takes proses as examples written by Yudafu, Zhengzhenduo, Zhengyimei, Zhouzuoren, Yeshengtao, Zhoushao, Zhoushoujuan, Chencongzhou, Fengyingzi, Youyuqi, Wangjiaju and other writers. We can find three types from the connotation of all the writings, including the writing of poetic appeal in describing Suzhou garden secnery, the observation of poetic taste of lige in Suzhou in a poetic perspective, and anecdotes about ordinary Suzhou citizens or celebrities living in Suzhou.Again, in essays about Suzhou, some of them still focus on the construction of Suzhou image,search of identity, which is different from the essays focusing on looking for poetic quality of Suzhou. This difference is reflected that writers looking for poetic in most cases,choose the spiritual needs of the subject as the content of writing, while writers constructing identity are more concerned about the creation itself. Modern prose writers, such as Sangu, Huxiaoming, Yuqiuyu, Zhuhong,have tried to explain both natual and cultural landscape from cultural aspect, and then construct the image of Suzhou city. In these writers'eyes, Suzhou is cultural and educational, gently and courageous.Finally,.whether there is any border in writers'imagination of Suzhou, this is the question this study can not avoid in the process of research. Modern prose writers's imagination of Suzhou city is based on their experience in the real world, so Suzhou city as objective substance is the base of modern prose writers'imagination and memory. However, the writing about Suzhou is divorced from the real world. This tendency makes the writers describe Suzhou from concept thits out of appreciation of beauty. Writers should be cautions to this tendency. In addition,in describing a city, the modern writers usually have four types of attitude, including learning through practice, praising, criticizing and constructing. But in writing of Suzhou, criticism is rare, which is due to the uniqueness of Suzhou city, for its beauty, and for its long history and profound culturl background.
