| Education, which determines a country's future, has been the essential element in constructing a country. To cultivate high quality teachers has been the key factor to bring up talents and to advance the education. Nowadays, with the development of English elementary education innovation and teacher professionalization, people pay more attention to the in-service English language teacher education, but neglect the pre-service English language teacher education more or less. In fact, the quality of English language teacher rests with the pre-service teacher education they have received.Therefore, it is of great importance to enhance the pre-service English language teacher education.Curriculum is the prerequisite of the teaching activities, and nearly all the innovations carried out depend on it. Whether the course offering is reasonable or not affects the constructing of English language teacher's knowledge structure and their development in future directly or indirectly. In other words, course offering plays a significant part in cultivating high quality English language teachers.However, there are still many problems in the course offering for pre-service English language teacher education in our country, such as, the illegible objective, the unreasonable structure and time allotment, the outdated content and the inadequacy of pedagogic education. These problems prevent the professional development of the students in English Education Department in normal colleges.So it is essential to consummate the course offering in pre-service English language teacher education based on the actuality of each normal college.After introducing several definitions and some theories like the Systematic Theory, the Theory of Need Analysis and the Theory of Teacher Knowledge, this thesis takes the English Education Department in a local normal college as the research object, analyzes the existing problems in their course offering by way of questionnaire and interview, and puts forward several suggestions based on the tenet of "from it, serve it". Some major findings could be concluded as follows.Firstly, the objective of course offering should be specified to cultivate English language teachers who will serve for elementary and secondary education, and to foster various techniques of English as the secondary and additional objective. Secondly, course offering concerning general education should be enriched and widened in more subjects and domains.It is not real to offer such diversiform courses to compete with colleges who stand in the top class,though; it is feasible to utilize the local resources as to call for various courses.Meanwhile, the proportion between selective courses and compulsory courses should be in balance and even the proportion among selective courses should be taken into consideration. Thirdly, as for the course offering concerning specialized education, it is necessary to handle the interrelationships between language skill training and language knowledge learning; and to establish a good ground is very necessary to students in this local normal college.Also, it is suggested to integrate correlated courses into a new one and to make a balance among different subjects. Fourthly, in the aspect of course offering concerning pedagogic education, according to our research, it is suggestive to enrich the kinds of courses offered and to make the exercitation more profound in order to clarify the features of a normal college. |
