"Peony Pavilion" is the most representative work by Tang Xianzu.It represents the highest level of his creativity in the ideological and artistic. It received wide attention from all sectors of society when it was finished. The drama critic in Ming Dynasty named Shen Defu,said that,as Tang Yireng's "Peony Pavilion" was borned, every household chanted it,and it nearly caused the reduction of"West Chamber". "Peony Pavilion" has the status of irreplaceable in the history of the Ming Dynasty opera even in the whole history of the Chinese classical opera.Predecessors on the "Peony Pavilion" has last for a long time. The drama critic in Ming Dynasty named Wang Jide made a high evaluation of Tang Xianzu and "Peony Pavilion" on his book"Temperament".Li Yu,the researcher in Qing Dynasty,picked on the difficult and obscure language of "Peony Pavilion" in his book"Xian Qing Ou Ji". However,many drama critics in Ming and Qing Dynasties,like Lv Tiancheng,gave high appraisal on the story and language of "Peony Pavilion".In modern times, the language of "Peony Pavilion" receives unanimous praise by the researchers.Yao Mang said the language of "Peony Pavilion" were elegant and customed in"Appreciating Peony Pavilion".Ye Changhai praised the language shallow with deep.Zhang Yihe considered that Tang Xianzu showed the roles'ideas, mental, emotional, look in front of the audience by a variety of rhetorical skills.From the perspective of rhetoric, this article studies the language features of "Peony Pavilion" deeply and Systematicly.Through context and rhetoric, speech and rhetoric, words and rhetoric, sentence with the rhetoric and the rhetoric,it investigates the significant role of rhetoric during the formation of language style.It have great significance for the study of Opera language, modern language and rhetoric.
