Urban music culture study has risen up as a new hotspot in contemporary ethnomusicology since the 1980s. Mass media also plays an important role in the development process of the urban music culture. Therefore, it's meaningful and worthwhile to analyze the function and significance that mass media has made on Shanghai urban music culture, though domestic scholars pay little attention to it.The thesis takes ethnomusicology as visual angle, comprehensively using the theories of ethnomusicology, urban culture study and communication to choose Jiefang Daily, Wenhui Daily, Xinmin Evening News, the three most influential and best represent newspapers with largest circulation in Shanghai and even Yangtze River Delta, as the research object to collect primary data and carry sample analysis.Combined with the theories of ethnomusicology, urban culture study and communication multiple research methods and techniques such as fieldwork and text analyzing have been used in the study. Taking the different perspectives of the three newspapers as the entry point in the case study of 2009 Shanghai Spring International Music Festival, to look into the image of Shanghai urban music culture which was expressed and constructed by the three newspapers from different perspectives, and try to analyze the function and significance that mass media has made on Shanghai urban music culture in depth.
