The structure of musical works is always the focus of people's attention in the musical creation and analysis. The musical structure in the 20th century is the outcome of the combination of various approaches, such as old "musical form", new vocabularies and innovation of technical concept. This paper is mainly with the musical works containing the structure of sonata form from the pioneer composers in the 20th century as major research objects. On the basic of related history, humanistic thoughts and social background of musical works, author of the paper concluded the similarities and differences of changes in the structural principle of sonata form in the musical works of different periods in order to seek for the relation between variability thought and invariability principle in the musical structure.This paper consists of two parts. Party one is the introduction to the development of sonata fonn. Chapter one summarizes the domestic and overseas studies on this subject and meanwhile identifies the research objects, significance and writing methods of this subject, and points out the leading point of this paper which is the variation mode of structural principle of sonata form in each works and concludes the creation characteristics, the similarities and connection, and further elaborates the development of this musical form in this period; chapter 2 briefly describes the development process of sonata form from classical period to Neoclassical Period which is before the period included in this paper as the changes in the style of this period brought new senses to many aspects of sonata form. The sonata form in the 20th century was mainly basic on tonal music. In the Neoclassical Period after the War I, the relation with traditional style was rebuilt.The section 2 describes the variation in the structure of sonata form in the 20th century and is also the main body of this paper, consisting 4 chapters in all.The chapter three starts with the analysis on the works of Messiaen, Boulez, Lutoslawski and Schnittke and studies the characteristics of variances in the structure of sonata form in each works; chapter 4 provides the comprehensive analysis and study on the four works and then summarizes the creation background, appearance characteristics, aesthetic function and creation ideology of works; chapter 5 summarizes and studies the musical factors influencing the variance in the structural principle, including theme, motivation, diversification of musical core, mode and tonality, multi-component and complex style, rhythm and time, strength mode and texture type, etc; chapter 6 is the conclusion of the paper and sets forth the relation of unity of opposites between altered structural principle and traditional one.
