Because of its cheep price and its improving technology, IP phone will be attractive to more and more consumers, and is challenging traditional long-distance calls, and international long-distance calls in particular. This paper begins with the origin of the IP phone and introduces telecom mechanism, forms of organization, and equipment of the IP phone. Comparing IP phone with the traditional phone service in their charges, QOS, and scales of network, IP phone has its advantages and disadvantages. From situations that companies inside and outside China carry out IP phone services and export's forecast, we can qualitatively forecast the future of IP phone in the next few years. Take the IP services carried out by China Unicom in Harbin for example, we can analyze and calculate the economic benefits of the IP phone services.
