| Asset liability management, or ALM, is a most influential operation and management method for modem commercial banks. The efficiency of ALM affects the competitive ability of banks directly. Through long-time practice, western commercial banks have accumulated lots of experience in ALM. And ALM has matured in western banks. However for commercial banks in China, especially for state-owned commercial banks, ALM has been not only implemented late, but also developed imperfectly. It has affected our banks' competitive ability to a great extent. Since China took part in WTO, the opening of our banks has taken on the trend of acceleration, and the competition among banks has been becoming more and more drastic. So under the present situation, it is important that we compare ALM of our state-owned commercial banks with that of western commercial banks, look for the gaps between them, and improve our banks' ALM with a definite purpose.Based on the reasons above mentioned, this thesis makes a study on comparing ALM of our state-owned commercial banks with that of western commercial banks. The whole paper can be divided into five parts as follows:The first part defines ALM and the range of the study firstly, and then introduces the development of the assets and liabilities management theories simply. The second part analyzes the importance and necessity of emphasizing our state-owned commercial banks' ALM under the macroeconomic background of china joining WTO nowadays. The third part compares ALM of western banks with that of our banks by fixed quantitative and qualitative analysis. It turns out that western commercial banks' ALM is more effective than ours. The forth part further analyzes the factors that cause effective or ineffective ALM from aspects of systems and information technology. Finally the thesis puts forward some policies that the government should improve exterior environment, and our state-owned commercial banks should quicken their steps of reform to perfect ALM.
