With the rapid development of global information technology, especially the emergence and permeation of Internet, informatization has infiltrated into various fields of society and economy. Meantime, the importance of business imformatization has been revealed more and more.The level of informatization has been a main symbol to weigh the integrative strength of a country or an area in the new economic age. The low level of informatization influences not only the competitive power of enterprises, but also the whole country. And shipping industry is the basic one of promoting world economy integration and international trade globalization, which holds the balance in the history of human society and economy.At present, Chinese shipping companies shoulder heavy responsibilities with low level of business informatization, slow development of Electronic Commerce and weak consciousness of informatization. There's a huge gap between China and foreign business in such aspect as capital, technology, management level and working ideology. It's in the same way when it comes to the course of business informatization, in particular the mid and small business in China. On the other point of view, there exits wide growing space on the depth and scope of business informatization in China.The direct infection brought by joining WTO to Chinese enterprises, which will blend more into world economy, is global competition. It is the crucial qualification for Chinese enterprises to expedite business informatization advance in order to participate in international competition and realize the share of resource and market in the world.Therefore, this article first introduces the theory and sums up the real state of business informatization of Chinese shipping companies. Then compared with foreign situation, it studies the status quo of shipping business informatization by applying the theories of Technology Economics, System Science and Modern Management. The author analyses the economic benefit of business informatization by using the method of Cobb-Douglas Produce Function, schemes out the format of questionnaire and evaluation form and builds the evaluation index system, and carries out a comprehensive analysis of business informatization effect by exemplification. Accordingly, the resolving measures and developing strategy are put forward aiming at the problems in real work.Since the 21st century is the century of ocean and information, by systematic research and economic evaluation on business informatization, it makes an unusual sense for shipping enterprises to enhance the ability of meeting an emergency and competing power and offers valuable reference for future development of business informatization.
