A French economist J. Gottmann, originator of the theory of the World Metropolis Circle, named the zone of Chinese Shanhai, Nanjing and Hangzhou as one of the world metropolis zones in 1950s. Since 1978, the economy in the Yangtze Delta area has developed rapidly, and the economic status of this area in the state has been more and more prominent with the acceleration of the world economic globalization in 21 century. The Yangtze Delta area lies in the middle part of Chinese eastern coastal area where the Yangtze River merges into the sea. Its location is regarded as the point of the intersection of economic zones of the Yangtze River and the coastal area which makes it boast of the leading status in economic development in Chinese three metropolis zones: the Yangtze Delta area, Zhujiang Delta area and the zone of Beijing, Tianjin and North Shandong. This dissertation proposes a development pattern of "one core and three wings" in which the Yangtze Delta area is the core and Zhujiang Delta area, the zone of Beijing, Tianjin and North Hebei, and Wuhan Region are taken as three wings. However, to achieve a successful performance as the core in economic development, the Yangtze Delta area is confronting many problems one of which is optimization of the economic structure including three focal questions: the layout, industry and sustainability. The question of layout involves macro-regional layout, macro-industrial layout and the position of the core city. The question of industry involves improving industrial patterns, restructuring enterprises and assembling the related industries. The third question, sustainability is in the research of the outlook on the generaldevelopment, natural environment and the resources in the Yangtze Delta area. The three foci, falling in the scope of optimization and adjustment of economic structure, are studied by centering on internal adjustment in the Yangtze Delta area to meet the goal of achieving the core status in Chinese economic development. Based on the study of three foci, the dissertation gives an analysis and proposes methods for settlement from a theoretical approach. In the final section, some approaches are put forward that the government should strengthen its functions and act as an essential assisting role in settling these questions.
