Objective To observe the condition of stain of thyroglobulin in thyroid glands and investigate the relationship between the PMI and the condition of degrade of thyroglobulin. To provide a method to estimate PMI for forensic medicine practice.Method 150 thyroid glands tissue of corpses, whose PMI lay within 1 day and 21 days and whose constitution and the causes of death were known were collected. These thyroid glands were stained with anti-thyroglobulin antibodies to observe the condition of thyroglobulin in colloid and the follicular cell of the the thyroid glands and the results were analized by computerized image system. The binomial regress equations were caculated and the coefficient of correlation (R2) were gotten.Result the colloid and the follicular cells of the thyroid glands of up to 5-day-old corpses produce a positive immunoreaction towards thyroglobulin in all cases whereas none of the corpses older than 13 days show such a reaction. Moreover, Three parameters reflecting the degradation of the thyroglobulin, including integral optical density, distributing density and aimed area were related to PMI significantly. Conclusion It is possible to estimate PMI by detecting thyroglobulin in the thyroid glands by immunohistochemical method.
