| Since our country's socialism market economy was established and developed in 1990s, Chinese society has entered an age of upheaval, which imposes much realistic significance on studies on many problems, such as resource flow, level separation, conversion of national function, social integration, set-up of social space. Theoretical sense of changes in empirical level is that several issues-establishing of boundary between country and society, reforming relationship of country and society-indicate a crisis in the whole thought of nationalism. China's social reality necessitates a theory to interpret those problems. Therefore, Civil Society Theory growing out of Western social experience was ushered into Chinese academy. With an exigent mind to solve problems or an aspire for modernization, people are unconsciously trapped to believe that the development of western modernization is endowed with a common usefulness. So mechanical research on China's reality by using western Civil Society Theory and negligence of the theory's legitimacy to China, of studies on indigenous experience and knowledge, of the influence of China's development on our county's civil society are the certain aftermath of a blind adoration and imitation of western civil society mode.Based on the review on western civil society theory and China's historical reality after opening up, this paper particularly discusses civil society's development of modern China in the way of comparing and demonstrating. And it holds that contemporary China has yielded a rudiment of civil society that features a co-existence of spontaneity and artificiality, independency and dependency, separability and cooperation. With these characteristics, the thesis brings out principles, targets and routes necessary to the construction of China's civil society. Furthermore, according to the above discussion, the author makes a study on the issue that what influence civil society's development will make on our country's democracy.This paper owns mainly four sectors, as following:The first part is a general introduction on civil society. It goes back on some scholars' viewpoints on civil society, such as Loke, Montesquieu in 1600s and 1700s, Hegal, Marx in 1800s, Habermas of today.
