Inculcation theory is an important part of Maxism. After historical investigation we came to the conclusion that inculcation had played a key role in traditional ideological and political work which took revolution and warfare as subjects. In the era of socialist market economy, however, inculcation still has great practical significance. What's more, it is in line with contemporary idea of "regarding human being as an ultimate goal ". From historical investigation and insightful illustration of inculcation theory made by Max, Engles, Lenin and members of CPC (Communist Party of China), we'll not only understand the origin and evolution of inculcation theory, but also realize that it is the objective reality of ideological struggle that stimulates the proposal of inculcation theory. There are formerly some long-standing mistaken ideas about inculcation theory, such as: considering it is obsolete; distorting it as a methodology; avoiding mentioning its compulsive nature. Nevertheless, through analyzing those mistaken concepts, we'll have a better understanding of the essence of inculcation theory. "regarding human being as an ultimate goal "and inculcation theory are not contradictory to each other. Analyzing the connotation of "regarding human being as an ultimate goal "and the essence of inculcation theory, we notice that inculcation theory attaches great importance to humanities and emphasizes comprehensive development of a human being. Scientific inculcation theory should be formed firstly on the basis of specific times. In other words, we should analyze its necessity and importance from the following points: developing of national and international situation essence of education and regular of development in knowledge; Secondly, we should be clear of the dialectical relationship between inculcation theory and ideological and political education. Their relations are manifested in 3 parts: the purpose of ideological and political education decides the objectives and assignments of inculcation; the practicality of ideological and political education decides the inculcation's form; the transcendence of ideological and political education determines scientific construction of inculcation.
