Mao Zedong was dedicated to exploring the ideal society all his life. In his youth he established the New People's Studies Institute and was engaged in the experiment in new residential quarters in order to construct an ideal society. Mao Zedong successfully forged a close-knit military community through the ideological remoulding in his 22-year military communist life. After the victory of revolution he made up his mind to put his ideals into practice. The People's Community Movement and the May 7 Directive serve as an example of his relentless endeavors to construct an ideal society. Several years before his death Mao Zedong had still been worried that there was the possibility that his revolutionary ideals would be discarded.Within the Communist Party of China, Mao Zedong possesses the realistic spirit which the average scholarly leaders do not possess, and the he idealistic spirit which the average men of action do not possess, which enables him to stand out, achieve great success and become a pre-eminent leader. However, in his remaining years, his idealism was no longer circumscribed by realism, so there were fallacies as to design of the ideal society, which bore a resemblance to mirage and was detached from the social reality of China and resulted in Mao Zedong's failure in the exploration and pursuit of the ideal society.Reviewing Mao Zedong's exploration of the ideal society, we discover it is well worth prizing his idealistic spirit. Mao Zedong's idealism is of great value to the development of contemporary China as a constant reminder of the process of the modernization of the world. Mao Zedong's idealism has perpetual glamour. "A man must have some spirit ", the remarks by Mao Zedong, will definitely pass on from generation to generation as a dictum. It is proved that it is impossible for us to depend on the class struggle and political movement to realize the ideal society. " Returming to Mao Zedong " alone can not really resolve the varied complicated problems in the course of the Chinese modernization. Only by greatly developing socialist market economy , building socialist democratic, fostering advanced socialist culture, can we embrace a well-to-do, fair and harmonious ideal society.
