From Economic Construction To Social Construction

The "Resolution on Major Issues Regarding the Building of a Harmonious Socialist Society", which was adopted at the conclusion of the Sixth Plenary Session of the 16th Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) on October 11, arouses intense responses from the Party as well as the whole nation. It also plays an important role in guiding and promoting the building of socialism with Chinese characteristics in China. Just like the concept of scientific development has become the theoretical indication of the new central collective leadership, building the harmonious socialist society has turned into a historic mission.A series of theoretical discussions and explorations in this thesis are centered on the theme of building a harmonious socialist society. It first reviews the economic achievements since the reform and opening-up and reveals the eminent social contradictions and social problems cropping up in the course of China's socio-economic development. It then explains how to correctly view the existing contradictions and problems before elaborates on the precondition for the social reform of China, namely, China's social background of society building. Next the thesis presents the necessity and feasibility of putting forward the task of building a harmonious socialist society in China at the present stage, the outlook of a harmonious society together with its significance and favorable conditions. Meanwhile, this thesis reviews social reform experience of European countries, that is, how the free capitalist countries converted a capitalist society with a severe class confrontation and constant class struggles into a healthy development direction characterized by a comparative stabilization, harmony and security between its social members. Moreover, it enumerates what social reform experience we can draw from the social transformation and social integration process of those European countries. The thesis concludes with the expounding of the direction and goals of social system construction as well as the establishment of the prerequisite mechanism for implementing the objectives.
