Japan is an island. Such an insular position affect Japan' all aspects including its geopolitical strategy.No matter before the Second World War or after it,the disadvantages of Japan' insular position obviously show in its geopolitical strategy.Any country' geographical conditions are unique, and can not be choosed,so each country will make different geopolitical strategy according to different geographical conditions.As to Japan,there is nothing it can do about the disadvantages of its insular position.Compared with other countries,Japan is more likely to make policies in accordance with its special geographical conditions.Because of this,the dissertation first analyse Japan' geographical conditions and the disadvantages of its insular position from respects as geographical position,neighbourhood,energy resources and so on.Insular position becomes the basis of Japan' geopolitical strategy,which embraces three periods of time and has different features during different period.Before the Second World War,Japan made the national expanding policy,invade Northeast and Southeast Asia ,and want to be a hegemonic country as those western countries.After the war,Japan begin to attach importance to economical development under the protect of America.Because of the antithesis of ideology, Japan' strategy becomes a part of America' strategy of global containmentment.After the Cold War,Asia becomes the center of Japan' foreign strategy,and Japan begin to continue its history of pursuing regional power,then global emonic country.
