Among China's bilateral relations Sino-US relations undoubtedly is the most important one, which has a direct impact on world peace, development, stability and common interests between China and US. The development of Sino-US relations can be roughly divided into three stages, during which friendship and confrontation coexist. Despite the great achievements on Sino-US relations research, attention on its development mode is still called for. As an effort in this regard, this paper charts its development from confrontation to cooperation and partnership, the latter being a long-term keynote. The changes in Sino-US relations will affect peace and stability worldwide. Even with possible difficulties along the path, this relation will continue to make progress. Three stages are proposed in this thesis to show how Sino-US relations developed: a confrontational pattern from 1949-1970; a cooperative pattern from 1971-1991 and partnership from 1992-2006. A conclusion is made at last: Sino-US relations has gone through three different stages each featuring a distinct development mode. It is predicted that for a quite long time Sino-US relations will continue in partnership.
