Cultivation Of Civic Awareness In The Perspective Of Socialist Democracy

Whether rational, enthusiastic and responsible citizens can be cultivated determines the continuation and development of the national democracy, as well as the social harmony and future. The core quality of the modern citizens is fine civic awareness. Civic awareness is the foundation of the country under the rule of law,the guarantee of the market economy and the guide of the cultural construction. Therefore ,one of the most important tasks in our era is to develop civic awareness. However due to the influence of the traditional culture and the system construction of our country, there exists the enduring subjects awareness. It's not an easy thing to shape qualified citizens and cultivate fine civic awareness. Father of American civic education Horace Mann ever said, it's easy to establish republic, while it's difficult to build up citizens of republic. This shows that civic awareness of people is not spontaneously formed and it requires self-conscious cultivation. Cultivation of civic awareness shouldn't only be restricted to civic education. This paper attempts to take the construction of socialist democracy as perspective. It starts with the definition of the citizens and civic awareness. It analyzes the reality gap and cause of civic awareness in our country. And on this basis it proposes the main strategies and thoughts on cultivating civic awareness.The paper is divided into three parts. That is:Part One: It defines the concept of citizens and civic awareness. And it describes socialist democracy, civil society,the relations between the society and the government, the relations between the government and the citizens. It lays the theoretical foundation of the paper.Part Two: It combs the development and status quo of civic awareness in our country. It analyses the main problems in civic awareness at this stage. It clarifies the main cause of stagnant situation in civic awareness.Part Three: It proposes the main strategies and thoughts on cultivating civic awareness in the perspective of developing socialist democracy: On the basis of that promoting political system provides the safeguard mechanism for civic cultivate awareness, in one hand the reform and innovation of cultivating civic awareness should be promoted in the school and the civic education system should be established;and in the other hand, the construction of the civic culture and society should be strengthened, and the fine environment of cultivating civic awareness should be built.
