A Research On Establishing A Good Police Image

This thesis focuses on how to establish a good police image,taking the Nantong Municipal Police Office of Jiangsu Province as an example.Against the background of "building harmonious society" and "promoting the rule of law" in China,police office and staff face new challenges as well as opportunities.The centre issue is how to set up a good image for policemen.Traditional point of view proposes more education, check and regulation which did not have satisfactory effect.Despite a lot of work have been done to improve the police image,more effective measures are needed.This research did fieldwork in Nantong by using questionnaires and interviews.Analyses of data collected from fieldwork shows factors influencing police image can be divided into outside ones and inside ones. Whilst inside factors which may have negative impact on police image include staff quality,corruption,sense of police responsibility,regulation on implementation,practical skills,supervision,communication and crisis handle;outside factors include government intervention,irresponsible media report,lack of resources and over-high expectation of the public.Based on the above analyses of factors,rather than suggesting reform inside the police,this research suggests the following recommendations to improve police image:to have correct guidelines for work;to improve staff quality;to perform police's duty more diligently;to make a better check institution;to strengthen public relations and to provide more financial resources.
