Tolerance,based on the value of pluralism and the equality of subject,the freedom of thought and action,is an acceptance and homage for other' s body,thought and action friendly to society,which is protected by the law and the system of constitutionalism.This kind of acceptance and homage needs good virtue of individual and society as a prerequisite and a protection of statutes outside and conscience inside to ensure that the individuals and groups have their own rights freely and not infringe on other' s rights and interests.Most of the major thinkers through the ages regarded the tolerance as a good virtue for the most part,or a protection of the basic rights of individuals.But the first man,who treated tolerance as a spirit which is a combination of good virtue as an attitude towards life and right to develop freely,is John Stuart Mill who is one of the famous English thinkers.Mill paid close attention to his ideas of utilitarianism,liberalism and classical political economy.But his ideology of tolerance as his rules of life and the core concept of his thought was overcastted by his other more well-known thinking.The moral dimensionality of combination of protection of individuals' and minority' s rights and good virtue of his attitude towards life is a breakthrough point to this article mainly,which wants to find theideology of tolerance in his thought in depth,and has a collation and analysis of them.This article is divided into five parts: The introduction part of this article is an abbreviated introduction of the significance of the choice of this topic and the research current status domestic and abroad,as well as the aims and research methods of this article.The first chapter wants to generalize and analyze the definition of tolerance in east and west,and then makes a thorough inquiry of his ideology of tolerance.And has a breakthrough point to the research perspective of Mill' s ideology of tolerance,to have an abbreviated introduction about his moral dimensionality of his ideology of tolerance.The second chapter has a summary and introduction to the background of ages and the ideological background of his ideology of tolerance,to probe into the generated background of Mill' s ideology of tolerance from the source.The third chapter is the main part of this article,which introduces the categories of Mill' s ideology of tolerance: political tolerance,moral tolerance,religious tolerance,the tolerance of thinking and expression,racial and ethnic tolerance,which is divided into five categories.The author reaches conclusion of the tolerant social view of Mill,and summed up the conditions for the formation of tolerant society envisaged by Mill.Sympathetic emotion,free and comprehensive education,the government whose duty is to protect the social stability and keep the restrict power,fair adjudication,are all important conditions to maintain the tolerant social view of Mill.The fourth chapter dissertate the characteristics of Mill' s ideology of tolerance,evaluate and analyze his ideology of tolerance,and finally dissertate the enlightenment of Mill' s ideology of tolerance in modern society briefly.
