The rapid expansion of population density and uneven distribution of resources in modern cities lead to social problems of urban living areas. The crime rates in residential districts of China tend to soar, resulting from speeding urbanization. The existing community layout can not meet the need of dwelling safety, because pilferage and sexual assault, which annoys social policing, can often be seen in residential districts. A proper environmental design could not only promote neighboring, but also improve community safety to some extent. The environment will affect criminals' cognitive system. Modification in environment will lead to a change in crime rates. Therefore, a skillful environmental design will contribute to discourage crime motive, and then prevent criminal behavior positively.This study analyzes from environmental criminology point of view, involving criminology, environmental psychology, behavioral geography, and cognitive science. After sociologists, criminologists, urban planners and architects working together, it has formed a relatively complete system. At present, this advanced concept of crime prevention and control has begun to apply into practice for crime prevention, criminal measures control and new construction of urban residential areas. The effective design, organization and arrangements for living environment of modern urban residential area could effectively improve the safety and quality of living area, not only encourage contacts and exchanges among the residents to reduce the potential fear of crime, but also effectively prevent and suppress criminal activities.This article attempts to combine theory and practice of analysis of exposition. In the introduction, the paper tells the background of the study in crime prevention and control of urban residential areas from the environmental point of view of Criminology, and research methods. The main body of the paper divides into four chapters. The first chapter clearly defined residential areas of urban crime, crime prevention, environmental criminology and other related concepts. The second chapter analyzes criminal character from the crime types, crime time, crime location, the types of urban residential area. The third chapter combines sample of cases and practice at home and abroad, analysis the theory and evaluation of practice on crime prevention and control of urban residential areas, including defensible space theory, the broken windows, crime prevention through environmental design and other important content. At the same time, the limitation of the measures is given. The fourth chapter based on the previous theoretical analysis, proposed measures of crime prevention and control in modern urban residential area, which is the combination of the reconstruction of physical environment of urban residential district and the formation of atmosphere to support the measures. In conclusion, the paper tries to make a careful probe into the system of study in the crime prevention and control of urban residential district from environmental point of view of criminology.
