China and Vietnam are both oriental countries with great civilization and long history. In ancient times, the two countries had witnessed the period of county, the period of interim and the period of suzerain-vassal, during which they maintained a friendly relationship for more than 2,000 years. However, wars between China and Vietnam were also seen teens of times. Because the circumstances and backgrounds, as well as the causes and the consequences, were quite different, the nature of those wars were, therefore, different too. After our analysis and generalization, it may fall into several categories. With the elapse of time, the nature of those wars becomes vague in people's mind, while some politicians and historians, out of political purpose, factitiously distort the nature of wars, which will inevitably mislead the leaders and people of the two countries and stand in the way of healthy development of the bilateral relationship. Under the guide of Marxian historical materialism, the dissertation recounts the backgrounds of each war, clarifies the historical truth, and objectively analyzes the nature of all the wars launched by the ancient Chinese Dynasties, which will provide foundations for the development of the bilateral diplomatic relationship in the new age. Through the analysis of the nature of the wars, the dissertation generalizes some objective regularities, which will hopefully provide some useful tips for the leading parties, government and people of the two countries, so as to promote friendly and future-oriented relationship according to the sixteen-word guideline and the four good spirits.
