U.S. unilateralism began in the colonial era, the so-called "neutral" made the United States disputes from Europe, to avoid the shackles of the old system of mainland, to maintain good relations with Europe, which for the early American colonial expansion, to protect the U.S. homeland security has played a certain role, but also the United States growing national strength and full-fledged, began to play an important role on the world stage. Thus the successive rulers recognized the importance of doctrine of unilateralism. Unilateralism has become a tradition of U.S. foreign policy. At the same time, if necessary, the United States did not avoid the use of multilateralism. Thus, unilateralism or multilateralism was only a way to achieve its "world hegemony" goal.President George W. Bush came to power in 2001, played the unilateralism to its limit. Once regardless of the world's people and its own people condemned to abandon multilateralism. March 20,2003, the United States recognized Iraq hid weapons of mass destruction and secretly support for terrorism, and as an excuse openly waged a unilateral war against Iraq, bypassed the UN Security Council. This is a controversial war, which caused a strong vibration and produced a broad and far-reaching impact in the whole world, but also gave us a wide range of inspiration and reflection. In 2009, Obama took office and then launched the Obama doctrine, which is a comprehensive amendment of the Bush's unilateral diplomacy, made the diplomacy by the United States return from unilateralism to multilateralism, showed a new atmosphere. Does that mean the United States abandon the unilateralism then? The United States could not possibly abandon unilateralism. Unilateralism is a traditional U.S. diplomacy, and is closely linked to the U.S. "hegemony", Successive U.S. foreign policy are the combination of unilateralism and multilateralism, expressed as an unilateralism or multilateralism, which decided by the then foreign environment, it is only a change of diplomatic way, the fundamental goal will not change.
