A Study On Chinese Society In Thailand According To The Policies Of Thailand Governmental

Thailand has been a main destination for many Chinese immigrants since 13 century. There are several reasons for Chinese immigrants choosing Thailand as their destination: go in for religion, have trade relations, evade the copes and famine, contracted emigrant and freedom emigrant.The Chinese society in Thailand had not formed until the beginning of the twentieth century. The policies about overseas Chinese made by the imperial court of Thailand were very friendly in order to study the advanced technological from China before the twentieth century. It was encouraged that Chinese move in and intermarriage with Thai. It was hoped that Chinese settle down in Thailand and their posterity be Thai forever. The overseas Chinese have played an important role in the economic development and social evolution of Thailand for hundreds of years.Because of tangle warfare among warlords in the beginning of the twentieth century, a large number of Chinese especially many Chinese women migrated to Thailand. The rate of intermarriage between Chinese and Thai was dropped very unexpectedly. The course of assimilation became very slowly.Usually the new moving-in Chinese lived in Chinese residential areas and organized unions in order to strength the relation between themselves. They were very concerned with the future and destiny of their motherland. They united together and devoted themselves for the Chinese revolutionary work. Chinese residential areas turned into Chinese society which was very different from the Thai society in the beginning of the twentieth century.The imperial court of Thailand panicked at the forming of Chinese society. They thought the overseas Chinese were coming for forcibly occupy turf and money from Thai. So the imperial court of Thailand made many harsh policies to restrict the overseas Chinese. The Chinese society was frustrated and developed very slowly. The system of Thailand government turned from autocratic monarchy into constitutional in 1932.However the situation of attacking overseas Chinese was not reduce but increase. The tide of attacking overseas Chinese lasted about seventy years except the period of"Free Thai"(1944-1947)。Thailand government did not abolish the policies about attacking overseas Chinese downrightly until 1975 in which year China and Thailand government established diplomatic relations.Now most of overseas Chinese have got Thai nationality, so we can call them Chinese-Thai. The policies to Chinese-Thai made by Thailand government have got liberal and tolerate. The Chinese-Thai have the same right with Thai. After living in Thailand for generations, the Chinese-Thai regard Thailand as their motherland already. They take part in the Thai society life of politics, economy, culture and so on, devote themselves to the country of Thailand. Though lost its national characteristic in political, the Chinese Society has a wonderful development in this era. The new development of Chinese Society shows mainly on the three parts: ethnic identity, economic setup, Chinese education.Sum up above, the policies formulated and carried out by Thailand government have a great influence on Chinese society. A study on these policies will help us to know the development of Chinese society in Thailand better.This article is inferred the following conclusions:First, one of the most important factors influencing the Chinese society in Thailand is Thailand governmental policies in historical perspective. The policies of Thailand governmental were made not only according to the situation internal but also the situation all around the world.Second, the Chinese-Thai have settled down in Thailand for hundreds of years. They are one part of the national country of Thailand now. We should realize their identity clearly.Third, though Chinese immigrants have assimilated in many aspects, they will still retain their own national special characteristics in some degree for a long history time.Fourth, education is very important in building the sense of ethnic identity on which the power and the hope of a national country is placed.Fifth, the pluralism of ethnics and cultures can get along very well in Thailand in almost hundreds of years. It is a model to build Harmonious Society for many countries in nowadays.
